Alona Beach

Alona Beach is located in the south-western part of Panglao island. It was named after a sexy actress of the late 1970's, Alona Alegre, who was shooting a movie there. Allegedly, this is the first public display of a Filipina wearing a bikini during the conservative 70's. Have you read Dekada 70 by Lualhati Bautista? There's nothing conservative about the 70's hahaha! There are a lot of pump boats anchored along the shore of Alona Beach. These boats are ready to take you to nearby Balicasag island or to take you dolphin watching. Alona Beach is made of white fine sand - Boracay sand is still better though. Why is Boracay sand the gold standard? Well, I guess most people have gone to Boracay and it's easy to compare beach sand when you have a common ground to start from. One of my favorite things to do in the beach is to get a massage - this was no exception in Alona Beach. The sand does get everywhere and you do feel like you're having a body scrub instead of a massage at times. :)

There was a lot of seaweed though along Alona Beach. Every morning the locals would be cleaning the shore and would be burying the seaweed under the sand everyday. The locals informed us though that we just visited at the wrong season when the seaweed is more prominent. Maybe we should have gone to Bohol back in March?

The water in Alona Beach is crystal clear though - as evidenced by the underwater picture of the starfish I've taken. If you're after the night life, go to Boracay. In comparison, the nightlife in Alona Beach is rather tame. Personally, I prefer beaches with less nightlife.
